What You Need To Know

  • If this is the first time your are getting your Missouri ID or you are renewing or replacing an ID that you do not have in your possession, you are most likely going to need a copy of your Birth Certificate to move forward.

    In order to get your Missouri birth certificate, you need a photo ID or two supporting documents. A Missouri BC costs $15. You can apply in person at a local vital records office, through the mail, or online. Additional costs apply if you do not go in person.

  • A nondriver ID is a basic ID that proves your identity on behalf of the state. In order to obtain a Missouri nondriver ID you need to bring supporting documents that prove your identity, lawful status, social security number, proof of Missouri residence, and legal name change if applicable.

    The Department of Revenue has comprehensive lists of acceptable documents a non REAL ID as well as a REAL ID. The requirements for a REAL ID are slightly different but costs the same as the non REAL ID.

  • If you are renewing you ID or replacing your ID and you have had an ID issued new to you since 2009, you will be able to verify your Social Security Number by reciting it at the license office.

    If you are getting your Missouri ID for the first time or this is you first ID since 2009, you will need to bring a physical document that states your social security number. Usually this is your social security card but there are a couple of other “acceptable documents” that satisfy the requirement.

    Replacing your Social Security Card should be free but must be done through the Social Security Administration Office. Use this field office locator find an office nearest you.

  • Paying for your nondriver ID costs $12 for a three-year expiration and $18 for a six-year expiration. If you need a birth certificate, that will cost an additional $15 in Missouri but varies state to state.

    There is also a program through the state of Missouri called Go Vote Missouri. The Secretary of State’s office is required to assist people with IDs for the purpose of voting. It is the same as a nondriver ID. You are encouraged to use this program if you have not already by going into a license office with all your necessary application materials and stating, “I need my free ID to vote.”
